00016,46,10/23/80,WARD AND RANDY,ALL CBBS VERS 3.4 FEATURES,NONE The major enhancement of version 3.4 is that message kill time was cut by about 1 minute, to 20 seconds or less. This was done by just "flagging" the summary as deleted, instead of processing the entire summary file "like an editor". The only consequence is that periodically we have to issue a "PURGE" command, which really does pack the summary (and takes about a minute). The previous MAJOR change in CBBS was at version 3.0: It was installed in Mid July, 1980. Here's some comments: * Message numbers are now 5 digits, and will never be packed or renumbered. * Speed detect at initial sign-on now has 110/300/450/600. * (A)lter baud rate function: 62 to ??? (650 is probably tops) * (E)nter msg command enhancements: * Clearer wording of password protecting your msg. * Line (I)nsert and (D)elete commands. * Control-K no longer aborts back to main FUNCTION menu: You go to message entry sub-function menu, and can use (A)bort to get back to main menu. * Control-I supported: Tabs to next column multiple of 8. Please use it instead of multiple spaces as it makes the most efficient use of disk space. * Entering a dash (-) in reply to "Subj", "Protect", "Password" or "Help" will back up one prompt, i.e. replying - to "Protect Y/N:?" backs up to Subject. Subject backs up to "Who to", which backs to itself. * G subcommand allows getting a previously entered message, editing it, and saving it as a new msg. (this function added in October 1979) * (H)elp function completely rewritten: It's keyword oriented. Try it out! (and if you find something missing PLEASE let us know via a msg or comments) * (V)ideo rubouts: echos backspace/space/backspace. * (T)ime command prints elapsed time. * (Q)uick summary and (S)ummary allow "-n" i.e. q;-20 means 20 msgs back from the current highest. * New control characters: * Ctl-W retypes the last Word (like Ctl-R does a line) (^W changed to WORD DELETE in version 3.5) 9/81 * Ctl-L shows current position in line while keying * Ctl-I indents 8. * New control from keyboards with no control characters: S suspends typing (e.g. look a while, then hit S to continue) C cancels the current output. K kills the current function. * These are still available as ctl-S, ctl-C, and ctl-K 00017,39,11/21/81,WARD AND RANDY,ALL CBBS VERS 3.5 FEATURES,NONE A new release of CBBS was developed during the summer of 1981, and installed in the fall. It includes primarily usability features. Still NOT IMPLEMENTED is "user logins". * SHORT command truncates all adjacent redundant characters: space, and: !"#$%&'()*+,-./ in order to minimize time. * NEWS command implemented because the "BULLETIN" was getting too large. Also allows looking at headlines, or details. * "V" (video backspace) command rewritten to ask you what character you want to use for video backspaces. * ASCII BS (^H) always backs up; * DEL always echoes * R (retrieve) command: * "-" in Retrieve retrieves the last 10 messages prior to the latest one referenced; at signon, the "next" msg is set up. * In "E" command (Enter message): * Experts (via X command) don't get prompted for help * Non-experts: asking them for help defaults to "N" (Thanks to Jim Willing, CBBS/Beaverton OR,) * Message entry: "-" now backs up from any question before you get into message entry i.e. SUBJECT? backs up to main menu. * Password simplified. No longer asks for system password. You must either enter a password, or press return to have no password assigned. * When leaving comments, and you press the double C/R to end, CBBS asks "Y/N DONE". Thanks to Dav Holle, for the idea. * Q (quick summary) and S (summary) commands: * significantly rewritten to support Boolean logic¨ (and/or/not), and searching on any field. Also simplified to search on the entire message header if no field specified. * Message fla The "Y/N" reply is taken in as a single-char input, so it doesn't "interrupt" the stacked commands. ]10/17/81 NEW "V" COMMress "M" (or C/R) to be asked for the message number(s) of the one(s) you missed. Multiple message numbers may be entered, separated by ";". * Press "K" to abort the summary; the flagged messages will be retrieved. "K"ing out of it then aborts back to the main FUNCTION... menu.
