4 dealers, clubs, magazines, ftp sites, Internet

This part of the FAQ is (at the moment) a copy of the 'instant
access' and 'club access' page in SQLW with only minor changes.
Telephone numbers are the one you have to use when phoning from
Great Britain or in international format. Adresses will be added
and phone numbers converted to international format soon.

Notes: Only larger dealers have Fax, often on the same number.
Some numbers no longer active in the QL world are give for
reference and support queries.

The QL Hacker's Journal (QHJ) is published by Tim Swenson
as a service to the QL Community. The QHJ is freely
distributable. Past issues are available on disk, via e-mail,
or via the Anon-FTP server, garbo.uwasa.fi. The QHJ is always
on the look out for article submissions.

4.6 QL Internet Resources

4.6.1 ftp sites

sitename: garbo.uwasa.fi
directory: /ql
Has only stuff in ASCII text, e.g. QHJ backissues, some
BASIC programs, some pascal programs.
mirrors of garbo are
ftp.nvg.unit.no in the
/pub/sinclair/mirrors/ql/garbouwasa.fi directory. Also
ftp.tu-dresden.de carries it.
Look in the sinclair directory
under flode.mirror/mirrors/ql/...
(similar to ftp.nvg.unit.no, its a mirror from nvg. [This
thing in dresden is awfully slow, so best you forget it if you
have access to garbo or flode. -ed]

sitename: maya.dei.unipd.it
directory: /pub/pub/sinclair_QL
Here you can find ca 6MB of QL programs (zoo'd and zip'd
binaries). For example C68, XLisp, Scheme, Rogue, some
packers etc. Some of the packers are not compressed, you
have to restore their fileheader on the QL before you can
use them. You can restore the fileheader with the follling
commands:
 a=alchp(length of program)
 lbytes program
 sexec program,a,length of program, dataspace
where 'dataspace' should be enough for the program; I
recommend to use 64K, most programs are well under this
value. (I assume this will not work on a standard QL, you'll
need a memory expansion).

sitename: wuarchive.wustl.edu
directory: /systems/sinclair
[I think this site mirrors both maya and garbo, but I'm not
sure -ed]

4.6.2 UseNet News

Nu, there are four QL related Groups. First comp.sys.sinclair,
which is also dedicated to the other micros made by Sir Clive
Sinclair (not Sinclair Research Limited!). Then there are three
groups from the maus net. (Also available from fido afaik.)
They are:
maus.sys.ql.c68-int (discussion about the QL C68 compiler)
maus.sys.ql.int (general discussions about the QL)
maus.sys.ql.ger (general QL discussions in german)

(The following hints are only for Unix systems!)

If you don't have Usenet access or don't have access to all of
the groups, try following to get them (note: then you can only
read but not write to them):

start emacs (X windows version!). Type CTRL-U. Type <ESC> X. Type
gnus <ENTER>. After some seconds emacs asks for a nntpserver.
(Offers a default) Try one of the following:

        news.uni-stuttgart.de
        rz.uni-karlsruhe.de
        xlink.net
        howland.reston.ans.net
        news.uni-oldenburg.de
        rz.uni-hildesheim.de

(I've only tried news.uni-stuttgart.de, and since then I get the
three groups from the maus net. -ed)

Alternatively if you hate emacs, try the following:

setenv NNTPSERVER news.uni-stuttgart.de
nn
