%OP%JUY %OP%PL54 %OP%AMM %OP%HM0 %OP%FM0 %OP%BM0 %OP%LM5 %CO:A,74,74%%R%%H2%MOTORWAY.DOC/1 %C%%H2%Ready reckoner of mileages, making full use of motorways. %JL%First make a printout of MOTORWAY.MLS using either a wide carriage %JR%printer or using condensed print on an A4 width printer. It will be much easier to understand this document if you do it now. Across the top are the principal motorways covered in this work. %JL%Down the left side are the junction numbers used on these roads, and %JR%across from these are the distances, in miles, from the chosen start %JL%point on each road. This start point may be at jnc 1 or it may be at a junction on another motorway. %JR%If you have decided on a route, travelling on motorways whenever possible %JL%then you will find that it takes little effort to calculate the distance %JR%between the junction at which you first join and the one at which you %JL%finally leave. (You can calculate by using the differences between cell %JR%values but it is not worth doing. If you are tempted you must remember %JL%that the number of a cell in a column is 6 more than the "jnc" number and the "M1" column is B, not A - see what I mean?) %JR%At the end of each column is the trunk road(s) going on from the end of %JL%the motorway, OR the jnc number on the motorway which has been joined. It %JR%may also have a reference to the inset table showing the further distance to principal towns/cities in the vicinity. %JR%It does look confusing at first glance but a couple of examples %JR%should make it all clear. You might even think of using it, in which %JL%case you could certainly make it more useful if you constructed your own %JR%personal list and substituted more appropriate towns/cities in the inset table. %JL%A couple of examples, in conjunction with your road map, will demonstrate %JR%how long distances can be very quickly calculated - much quicker than the time taken to type the examples! %H2%Example 1. %H2%Southam to Glasgow. Best and shortest route is - M40, M42, M5, M6, A74, M74, M8. Southam to jnc 14 of M40 11 (from personal list) To jnc 3A of M42 13 (86-73) To jnc 4A of M5 8 (8-0) To jnc 8 of M6 21 (32-11) To jnc 44 of M6 192 (229-37) A74 to M74 63 (see e ) To jnc 8 of M8 26 (26-0) To jnc 19 of M8 (Glasgow Central) %H1%10%H1% (40-30) %H2%344 miles. %R%%H2%MOTORWAY.DOC/2 %H2%Example 2 %H2%Southam to Sheerness Choice of two routes - M1, M25(N) A2/M2/A249 or M40, M25(S), M20/A249. %H2%First%H2% - to jnc 16 M1 15 (from personal list) M1 to jnc 6, jnc 21 on M25 50 (62-12) To jnc 2 of M25 56 (123-(78-1)) A2 to jnc with M2 10 (from map) To jnc 5 of M2 13 (13-0) A249 to Sheerness %H1%11%H1% (from map) %H2%155 miles %H2%Second%H2% - to jnc 12 on M40 7 (from personal list) M40 to jnc 16 M25 66 (66-0) To jnc 5 M25 50 (62-12) To jnc 3 M20 9 (from map) To jnc 7 M20 10 (20-10) A249 to Sheerness %H1%17%H1% (from map) %H2%159 miles %JL%Yes, it is still necessary to determine some distances from your map but %JL%there is a terrific saving in time if you want total mileage. %JR%If you are wondering why it is necessary to know the precise distance %JL%before you start out then I will say that it is the travel %H2%time%H2% which is %JR%important. You can make a very good estmate of time only if you know the %JL%distances on and off motorways. I averaged 1200 miles per week for %JR%several years and can't remember more than a couple of missed %JL%appointments and none due to badly estimated journey times. Depending on %JR%the time of day, the time of year, the weather etc you can put a figure %JL%on your best motorway speed (between 50 to 60 mph) and best trunk road %JR%speed (40 to 50 mph). Add 20 mins for a possible puncture and, barring a smash, you should arrive on time! %JL%Kick it around, put in roads and additional information to suit your %JL%own needs. If all you can say before you erase it is - "well, it was different" I'll be happy!
