INSTRUCTIONS FOR TRANSFERING Z88 FILES TO YOUR Z88 Construct a serial cable for your QL or IBM as described in my UPDATE article. Radio Shack has all the parts you need. You may be able to get the parts for less at another electronics outlet. You may get assistance on soldering a cable at your local Users Group or a computer repair shop may be able to make a cable for you. I can also provide additional assistance if you need it. Most of the Z88 programs on the disk are in the Z88s tokenized format. They are ready to run on the Z88. You will need an xmodem program on your desktop machine and an xmodem program on your Z88 to transfer the files. I would suggest using Procomm on your IBM and Q_Link on your QL. A Z88 xmodem program is included on the disk. The files Z88COM.CLI and PHONE.LOG will need to be transfered through the Z88 Import/Export program. Procomm and Q_Link can both send ascii files or you can write a basic program to do it. Read the terminal program documentation if you are unsure of how to send ascii files. Basically in Q_Link you select the document functions with F4 and follow the menu choices. In Procomm you press the PageUp key and follow the menu choices. You can customize Ascii transfers in Procomm by selecting ALT S and choosing ascii setup. It is important that the baud rate, parity, word length, and stop bits are set to exactly the same settings on both the sending and receiving machines or the transfers will not work. On the Z88 panel set Transmit baud rate to 9600, Receive baud rate to 9600, Parity None and Xon/Xoff to No. In Procomm at ALT P select 9600,N,8,1 and COM1. In Q_Link select 9600 baud, 8 bit and SER2IR. In Z88 Import/Export select R for receive and your filename but don't press Enter yet. Go through the ascii file send procedure on your desktop and select a filename. Press enter on both machines at the same time and the file should be transfering. Once you have Z88COM.CLI in your Z88 go through the procedure to make this into a Z88 BASIC file. This is on page 201 of the Z88 manual. Make sure all the characters are flush with the left side of the screen. Save the resulting file with a .bas extension. and you are in business. You will also need the PHONE.LOG file for Z88COM to operate. Now you can forget about Import/Export and use Z88COM to transfer the remaining files. It is a much simpler process. In Z88COM select S or R to send or receive and a filename. In Procomm select PageUp or PageDown, Xmodem and filename. In Q_Link select X for Xmodem. It will ask you CRC (Y or N). Select N as Z88COM only has Checksum. Select a filename. Press Enter on both machines at the same time and your file should be transfering. For additional information read the documentation for your terminal program. For additional information on Z88COM read Z88COM.DOC on the disk. I have tried to include everything you need to archive Z88 files on your IBM or QL with the exception of a cable. The files CRLF for the IBM and Eoln_exe on the QL convert Z88 files to a form that you can type or view. They can also be imported into a word processor. Check out ZFU.BAS to greatly enhance the archiving process. This is a shareware program and well worth the money to the author. Have fun looking through all the files and programs on the disk.
